How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through the grey wire. The ECU uses this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can trigger spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. However, the code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult as there are two different pins for the connector and they have different functions but the most effective method of testing it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is functional, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. Examine for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a massive drop in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when i start the engine without sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I get 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car can start when the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is connected but it still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do. I think I've all other possibilities out. However, i'm afraid that I may have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles.
